I agree. I was very excited about the prospect of this "sequel" but disappointed in the actuality. Though the writing is Austen-like, the characters have no life. Elizabeth Bennett Darcy is only a shadow of her former self. There were also several points which deviated from the original. How is it that Mrs. Martin names the child John, "after her father" when Harriet Smith aka Mrs. Robert Martin never knew who her father was? Also, the implication that Darcy's wealth played any part in Elizabeth's choice of him as a mate is so wrong - on many levels. Maybe James only saw the movies but didn't actually read the books.

Nice review and I am amazed to see how similar our impression of the book is
I also reviewed the
book here: http://www.mysterytribune.com/2012/02/11/read-death-pemberley-read/
and was kind of disappointed as I think in spite of
all the notable things, this book had too much fluff in it and also the
recaps to Pride and Prejudice were to some extent excessive

Hi Valentina. Thanks for your comment and please be fussy! It's always good to know where I've missed something. But Double Indemnity wasn't actually filmed in the Bradbury Building I'm afraid. It was a mock up on the Paramount Lot. How accurate it was I don't know though.

It's a shame that Sunset's bookstores have disappeared. There are still some great bookshops in LA though, particularly in Westwood.

Some fussy comments: The scenes involving Walter Neff's office were shot in the Bradbury Building, built in the late 1890s and still standing. Thus the "art deco railing" isn't art deco; it's art nouveau. Sunset Blvd., the site of Geiger's book shop, was once filled with book stores on both sides of the street. (Pickwick's was my favorite.) Alas, most are long gone.

Hi Lawren - yes you're right about that. Have you read Richard Rayner's A BRIGHT AND GUILTY PLACE? It explores the connections between the Crawford Case and Spanish Blood. Chandler certainly knew of the case and, as the picture suggests, knew Lesley White too. I wonder what they talked about?

Chandler also drew from White for the scenario in "Spanish Blood" - the link is thorugh the Crawford case. I also heard somewhere that the famous "Black Mask" photograph in which both Chandler and Hammett appear was taken by Leslie White, who was a photographer before becoming involved as a peace officer.

Hi Chris - you're absolutely right! I have been focusing on the book more than the film, so I didn't notice that at first. Thanks for pointing it out. Have you spotted anything else? I am about to do a new post over the weekend adding a few more Chandler references.

Hello Diane, Thank you for your message.
I am very sorry about the delay. Unfortunately I have not been able to finish writing the book yet. This is my fault entirely. Last yea, due to various events, new Chandler letters became available and I have had to read them carefully to make sure that my book is up to date. This has contributed to the delay. I am about to send the finished manuscript to my editor and I will report back as soon as possible as to when the book will now be released.
